What We See in Shreveport Homes

Shreveport's housing runs from 1920s bungalows to subdivisions built last year, and each age has its own AC trouble.

Ranch houses from the 1950s to the 1970s. Think Sunset Acres. Many of these homes are on their second or third air conditioner, and plenty still run an R-22 system from before 2010. When one of those leaks, the repair is expensive because R-22 itself is scarce now. We'll give you the repair price and the replacement price side by side.

Two-story homes. In places like Southern Trace and Spring Lake, the upstairs is usually the problem. Heat rises, the attic sits right on top of the bedrooms, and the upstairs system or zone runs nonstop all afternoon. Often the fix is airflow, not a new unit: a crushed duct, a closed damper, or a return that's too small.

Older homes with add-on AC. Central air was added to a lot of older Shreveport houses decades after they were built. The ductwork had to fit wherever it could, through tight attics or under pier-and-beam floors. Leaks and loose joints there cost you cooling you never feel.

Wondering what a capacitor, contactor, drain line or coil actually does? Our AC repair guide covers each one in detail.

Is It Broken, or Just Hot Out?

A lot of AC calls in August turn out to be a working system on an extremely hot day. Most home air conditioners are designed to keep the house roughly 20 degrees cooler than outside. So on a 98-degree afternoon, 77 or 78 inside can be normal, even with the AC running the whole time.

Here's a simple test you can do. Put a kitchen thermometer in a supply vent near the indoor unit for five minutes, then hold it at the return grille. A healthy system usually shows the supply air 15 to 20 degrees colder than the return.

These are not normal, whatever the weather:

  • The difference at the vent is under 10 degrees
  • Frost or ice on the larger copper pipe outside
  • The system turns on and off every few minutes
  • It runs all night when it's only 80 outside and the house still won't drop
  • The outdoor fan isn't turning while the unit hums

If you see any of these, call us. If it's just hot, we'll tell you that too.

When It Quits on an August Afternoon

By August, a Shreveport air conditioner has been running most of every day since May, and that's when the weak parts give out. The outdoor unit is usually where it shows first. If it hums but the fan on top won't spin, a worn capacitor or a failing condenser fan motor is the likely cause, and running it like that overheats the compressor, so switch the system off and call. If the outdoor unit won't come on at all, or won't shut off, the contactor (the switch that turns it on and off) often has burned or stuck contacts.

Inside, ice on the copper lines or the indoor coil means the system isn't moving enough air or is low on refrigerant. Set the thermostat to off, or to fan only, so the ice can melt while you wait, because running it frozen is hard on the compressor.

Most of these get fixed on the first visit, since our trucks carry the common parts. A leak is the exception. Finding it takes longer, and on an older R-22 system it leads to the repair-or-replace question further down.

What Shreveport Customers Say

What It Costs

Air conditioning repair here starts with the same $99 diagnosis as in Bossier City. There's no extra charge for the drive across the river. After that, the price depends on the part, and you approve the price before any work starts. If you're wondering what happens once the tech arrives, we lay out every step of an AC repair visit.

Repair or Replace an Older Shreveport AC?

  • Small electrical repairs are usually worth it. A capacitor, contactor or fan motor is often a reasonable fix, even on an older unit.
  • An R-22 leak is a bigger call. Production and import of R-22 ended in 2020, so fixing the leak and recharging can cost a large share of a new system.
  • Age matters. Past about 12 to 15 years, money for a major repair often goes further toward a new system.

If the repair doesn't make sense on an older system, we'll give you a free quote on AC or furnace installation.

Shreveport AC Repair Questions

My AC runs all day in August and the house sits at 78. Is it broken?

Maybe not. On a 98-degree day, most systems can only hold the house about 20 degrees cooler. Check the temperature difference at a vent, as described above. If it's under 10 degrees, or there's ice on the lines, call us.

Do you work on older systems in Shreveport's historic neighborhoods?

All the time. Older homes in Highland, South Highlands and Broadmoor often have R-22 equipment and ductwork squeezed into small spaces. We repair what's worth repairing and tell you plainly when it isn't.

Do you repair AC in Shreveport rental properties?

Yes. Landlords and property managers can call us, and we'll set up access with the tenant.

Who can fix my AC in Shreveport at night or on a weekend?

Ice Cold A/C and Heating does, nights and weekends included. Our phone, (318) 459-7575, is answered at any hour, and a call is all it takes to get a tech headed your way.
