How a Heat Pump Heats a House

In summer, a heat pump is just an air conditioner. It pulls heat out of your house and dumps it outside. In winter, a valve flips the flow around, and it pulls heat out of the outdoor air and brings it in. Even at 35 degrees, there's heat out there to move.

That works well in north Louisiana, where most winter days stay above freezing. On the few really cold mornings, the heat pump gets help from electric heat strips inside the air handler. Your thermostat may show that as "aux heat." Seeing it now and then is normal. If it's on all the time, the unit probably isn't doing its share, and the power bill will show it.

Heat Pump Repair in Bossier City: What We See Most

  • Blowing cool air in heat mode. Often a stuck reversing valve, a low refrigerant charge or a failed outdoor fan.
  • Ice that won't clear. A little frost in winter is normal, and the unit melts it off every so often in defrost mode, sometimes with a cloud of steam. A unit that stays coated in ice usually has a bad defrost board, sensor or fan motor.
  • Aux heat running all day. The unit itself has quit or is weak, so the heat strips are carrying the whole load at a much higher cost.
  • Won't start, or hums and clicks. A capacitor or contactor, the same parts that fail on air conditioners.
  • Short cycling. It runs for a minute, stops and starts again. This can be a thermostat, a refrigerant problem or a unit that's too big for the house.

The tech finds the cause for $99 and gives you the price before any work starts. Most of these parts are on the truck. Got a gas or electric furnace instead? Our heating and furnace repair covers those.

Heat Pump or Gas Furnace?

If your house has natural gas, you have a real choice. A gas furnace puts out hotter air and doesn't care how cold it gets outside. A heat pump costs less to run on most Louisiana winter days and handles cooling too, so you're buying one system instead of an AC plus a furnace.

A lot of homeowners here go with a heat pump paired with a gas furnace, which some people call a dual fuel system. The heat pump handles mild days, and the furnace takes over when it gets truly cold. We'll lay out the numbers for your house at the free estimate, without pushing one way.

Heat Pump Replacement and Installation

A heat pump runs in winter too, so it works more hours than a straight AC. When an older one needs a compressor or a big refrigerant repair, replacement is usually the better spend.

We install Trane heat pumps, and Mitsubishi ductless heat pumps for rooms or additions without ductwork. Every installation is sized to your house with a Manual J load calculation, not copied from the old unit's label. Our HVAC installation guide walks through install day, and for rooms without ducts, ductless mini-splits are usually the answer.

SWEPCO Incentives

SWEPCO helps pay for high-efficiency heat pumps and air conditioners in SWEPCO-served Louisiana homes, up to $3,500 for a qualifying unit. The amount depends on the equipment and its efficiency, and funding is limited, subject to SWEPCO program rules. Ice Cold is on SWEPCO's contractor list, so we can help with the paperwork. The 2026 program year ends November 27, 2026, or sooner if funds run out. Check SWEPCO's Louisiana HVAC incentive program page for what qualifies. Repairs and new systems can also be financed through Wells Fargo or Synchrony.

Heat Pump Maintenance

A heat pump works all year, so it wears faster than an AC that rests all winter. Two visits a year, one in spring and one in fall, keep it efficient. Our maintenance visit checks refrigerant pressure, cleans both coils, flushes the drain, tests the capacitors and the defrost cycle, and tightens the electrical connections.

Between visits, keep the outdoor unit clear of leaves and pine straw, and change the filter. A dirty filter hurts the system in winter just as much as in summer.

Heat Pump Questions

Why is steam coming off my heat pump in winter?

That's the defrost cycle. The unit reverses for a few minutes to melt the frost off its coil, and the melting ice makes steam. It's normal as long as the ice clears afterward.

What is emergency heat?

It's a thermostat setting that turns off the heat pump and runs only the electric heat strips. Use it only if the outdoor unit has failed and you're waiting on a repair, because it costs a lot more to run.

Does a heat pump work when it's below freezing?

Yes, down to well below freezing, although it puts out less heat as it gets colder. That's what the backup heat strips are for on the coldest mornings. Newer models, like Mitsubishi's ductless units, keep heating at much lower temperatures.

How much does a new heat pump cost?

It depends on the size of the house, the efficiency rating, and whether the ductwork needs work. We give a free, written, itemized estimate, and SWEPCO incentives may bring the cost down, subject to program rules.

Do you repair heat pumps in Shreveport too?

Yes. We repair them across Bossier City, Shreveport, Haughton, Benton and Blanchard, with no extra charge for the drive.

Heat Pump Not Heating?

Call (318) 459-7575 any time. If it's cooling season, our AC repair team works on heat pumps too, since in summer they're the same system.
