A restaurant can lose a day's worth of food before lunch is over, so we treat a warm cooler like the emergency it is. Refrigeration runs on the same cycle as an air conditioner: a compressor, two coils, a fan or two and a refrigerant charge. The difference is the temperature. Your AC is happy at 75 degrees. A walk-in freezer has to hold zero all day while someone opens the door every five minutes. Our techs handle refrigerant under EPA Section 608 certification.

Walk-In Coolers and Freezers

A walk-in is usually the most expensive thing in the kitchen to lose, because everything is in it. These are the problems we find most:

  • Ice on the evaporator coil. The fans inside the box blow across a coil that should look like metal fins, not a block of ice. A failed defrost heater, timer or drain line heater lets the ice build until air can't get through.
  • Worn door gaskets and hinges. A door that doesn't seal pulls in warm, wet air all day. You'll see frost around the frame and water on the floor.
  • A dirty or overheated condensing unit. The outdoor half often sits on the roof or behind the building, in full Louisiana sun. Packed with cottonwood fluff, grease or dust, it can't get rid of heat.
  • Refrigerant leaks. A slow leak shows up as a box that runs all day and still creeps up a degree or two at a time.

Most health inspectors want cold food held at 41 degrees or below. If your walk-in cooler reads 45 and climbing, call before the food has to be thrown out.

Reach-In Coolers

Reach-ins live right on the line, next to fryers and flat tops, so they breathe some of the hottest, greasiest air in the building. The condenser coil on the bottom or top collects that grease and flour until the unit runs nonstop and the compressor overheats. A coil cleaning fixes a lot of "my reach-in won't keep up" calls. Bad fan motors, a stuck thermostat and torn gaskets cover most of the rest.

Sandwich and Prep Tables

A prep table has a hard job. The cabinet below might hold 38 degrees just fine while the pans up top sit in warm kitchen air with the lid open all afternoon. When the rail runs warm, we check the things that usually cause it: the coil, the fan that pushes cold air up to the pans, the lid and gaskets, and how full the pans are. Pans filled above the cold line won't stay cold no matter what the unit does.

Refrigeration Repair for Bossier City Restaurants and Stores

Summer is when most commercial refrigeration fails here. A kitchen on Airline Drive can run past 90 degrees in July, and a condensing unit on a flat roof in Bossier City sits in even worse heat. Add the humidity, and every open door brings in moisture that turns to frost on the coil. Equipment that coasts through March can start losing ground by June.

We take calls from restaurants, convenience stores, churches with kitchens, schools and bars across Bossier City, Shreveport and the nearby towns. If you already use us for commercial HVAC, it's the same number and the same company.

What to Do Before We Get There

  • Move the most expensive product to a working cooler or into iced coolers.
  • Keep the door shut. Every opening lets the cold out faster.
  • Check the breaker and make sure the unit is still plugged in. Cords get knocked loose during cleaning.
  • Look at the coil inside the box. If it's a solid block of ice, tell us when you call.
  • Write down the temperature and the time. It helps with the diagnosis and with any food safety records you keep.

What Affects the Repair Price

There's no flat price for refrigeration work, because the jobs vary so much. A clogged drain line or a dirty coil can be a short visit. A failed compressor on a walk-in freezer is a big repair, and sometimes a replacement makes more sense. The price depends on the part, whether it's on the truck, how much refrigerant the system needs and how hard the unit is to get to. Either way, the tech explains what's wrong and gives you the price before any work starts.

Keeping It Running

Most refrigeration breakdowns we see could have been caught early. Every few months, someone should clean the condenser coils, check the door gaskets and make sure the drain lines are clear. Kitchens with heavy grease or flour need it more often. Ask us about scheduled maintenance for your equipment, so the work happens on your schedule and not in the middle of a Friday dinner rush.

Commercial Refrigeration Questions

Do you work on walk-in freezers too, or just coolers?

Both. Walk-in freezers use the same parts as coolers, plus defrost heaters and controls that coolers don't always have. Defrost problems are one of the most common freezer calls we get.

Can you come at night or on a weekend?

Yes. We answer the phone 24 hours a day, every day, and refrigeration calls are some of the ones we move fastest on.

Do you fix home refrigerators?

Our refrigeration work is focused on commercial equipment for businesses: walk-ins, reach-ins, prep tables and ice machines, the same kind of heavy-duty refrigeration that sits next to the HVAC systems we already service.

Should I repair my old walk-in or replace it?

It depends on what failed. A new door gasket or fan motor is worth doing on almost any box. A dead compressor on an old system that uses R-22 or another phased-out refrigerant is a different story. We'll give you both numbers so you can decide.

Do you service the same equipment in Shreveport?

Yes. We cover Shreveport and Bossier City, plus the towns we serve nearby, at the same rate.
